If you're not already aware, each year on August 2nd is the Franciscan FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS OF THE PORTUINCULA and the day to gain the special "Portuincula Indulgence" (a full remission of any purgatorial cleansing in the afterlife due to our unatoned sins). This indulgence was the result of a private revelation and a mark of favor granted by our Lord to the world through the intercession of St. Francis of Assisi. The Church, through Pope Honorius III, ratified the indulgence in 1216.
To gain the Portuincula Indulgence, one must fulfill the following on August 2nd:
+ Honor Our Lady of the Angels on her Feast Day
+ Attend Mass and receive Holy Communion
+ Be detached from sin, and go to Confession within 20 days before or after 8/2
+ Pray for the Pope's intentions and recite an Our Father and the Creed
This is completely do-able, and when one is rightly disposed, it wipes out ALL purgatory time we may have accumulated up to the time the Indulgence is gained! Otherwise, if one is not completely detached from sin, it is a Partial Indulgence.
Take advantage of this gift from Jesus and Our Lady, and invite family and friends to observe the Feast and to gain the Indulgence. This year, August 2nd is this upcoming Saturday, which is also a First Saturday. What an appropriate day to pay special Honor to the Blessed Virgin!
